During the Bakumatsu, the Oniwanbashu were stationed at Edo Castle (Edo was Tokyo's former name). As a highly skilled group of ninjas. Okina has bestowed the title of leader onto Aoshi after Misao's father had died, since he believed that "young blood" would help the group to survive. The original group, often referred to as the "Tokyo" group, consisted of Aoshi, Beshimi, Hyottoko, Hanya, Shiki-jou. For some reason, they ended up with a bad luck spell... and all were killed when they sided with Kanryu to kill the Battousai, who Aoshi had been searching for to defeat (to claim the "strongest" title for the Oni's).
While Aoshi was out for blood, the remaining members of the Oniwanbashu (Okina, Misao, Okon, Shiro, and Omasu) stayed at their Kyoto base at the Aoyia. They tried desperately to rebuild and regroup themselves, but Aoshi insisted on becoming stronger so that he could defeat Kenshin (whom he blamed for the death of the Tokyo Onis). This left Misao in charge, who was heartbroken over the loss of her Aoshi-sama AND the people she had considered her family. However, she does manage to lead the Oniwanbashu and rally their spirits to the point that they are able to protect Kyoto from harm.
